What about backups?

The backup and restore mechanism is a service provided by Apple and is the same for all iPhone applications. If you connect your iPhone to your computer, iTunes will backup the data on your iPhone automatically. If you never synchronize your iPhone with your computer, you will have no backup in consequence.

But there's problem you might run into: if you have lost the data on your iPhone (for example because you deleted the application from your iPhone) and connect your iPhone to your computer afterwards, iTunes will automaticaly write a new backup and overwrite the previous one. So your old backup and your data are gone. To prevent this you have to follow these three steps:

1. Deactivate the automatic syncing for your iPhone in the preferences of iTunes before you connect your iPhone with the computer (iTunes > Preferences > Devices > Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods)

2. Connect your iPhone and wait until it is recognized iTunes. Since the syncing has been deactivated, iTunes will not perform a backup now.

3. Right-Click (or Control-Click) on the iPhone symbol and choose "restore from backup".

Don't forget to reactivate the syncing after you are finished.
